Nick Crane has taken a look ahead to what will hopefully be a busy summer of cricket.

With the country in lockdown and the rain continuing to fall, the idea of the cricket season may seem a long way off, however at Winterbourne Cricket Club preparations for the 2021 season are well underway.

The first senior cricket of the season is due to take place on Sunday 25th April with the club once again entering the Voneus Village Cup and our 5 senior teams are scheduled to commence league cricket from 1st May. Along with the return of traditional Saturday cricket, the club have entered the Natwest T20 tournament which starts on 2nd May against Thornbury and Stroud.

Our youth set up is working hard to get ready for a full summer of cricket. Online booking for our ECB All Stars and Dynamos programmes (5-10 years) is coming shortly and we hope large numbers of local children will sign up for the fun sessions which take place on Friday evenings from 6-30 to 7-30pm when the bar and tuck shop will be open and our BBQ cooking. This year we have competitive youth age group teams for boys and girls from the ages of 7 all the way through till 19 who will compete in a range of different leagues, cups and festivals throughout the summer. The club continues to grow its ties with Gloucestershire County Cricket Club and will be the host venue for the U11 side for their 2021 campaign. Any youth-related enquiries can be directed to our Youth Chairman, Chris Shine.

The youth and senior cricket will be great opportunities to come down to the club with the clubhouse and bar open this summer after the long winter to enjoy a drink with high quality cricket to watch.

As much as some like having the excuse of not seeing the ball because of the condition of the sightscreens we are looking to improve the club’s facilities with new sightscreens being ordered with funding assistance from the Parish Council. Another project we are working on is the provision of additional storage space for our dedicated groundstaff and if anyone in the community would be prepared to sponsor all or some part of this vital wooden storage facility, we would be very grateful and be keen to make contact with you. With the club continuing to grow we have great sponsorship opportunities, for a range of sponsorship opportunities please contract our Chairman, Bob Vickery.

We will be looking to host regular social events during 2021 including Quiz Nights, Race Nights and many, many more and throughout the season the club will be open throughout the week for people to enjoy refreshments as they watch our teams in action or for a swift one after training.
